It’s been 43 years since Ministikwan Lake has opened her bowels and swallowed a living soul from this earth. Last night she did just that. Sunday had been an incredibly hot day with the heat of the day staying with us well into the evening.
It was late in the evening when Marty Chief a local resident along with several friends went down to the beach to cool off with a quick dip in the lake.
When they arrived at the beach Marty headed down to the water to cool off, as he was being refreshed by the cool water, he wandered into a depth of water where he was unable to navigate with his feet.
Marty was not a swimmer, when he went over the drop off panic set in, he tried fearlessly to be resilient in the water, but she took him under.
His friend David attempted a rescue unfortunately he was also a non swimmer and was unable enact a positive out come.
Authorities were called to the scene, while on the scene another event was unfolding else where, the ambulance which was on the scene was re-dispatched.
When it was discovered their attendance was not required at the re-dispatch they headed home. They did not return to their original call out.
While the authorities’ wheels were turning slowly, several local people arrived at the house looking for a boat to search for Marty. With a flashlight we headed off for the location.
When we arrived many people were searching the shore line, we picked up a couple more people with flashlights and started searching the deeper water.
It was on our third pass he was spotted and before long we had him out of the water and on the shore, where first aid was administered.
By this time many family and friends fearing the worst, had gathered on the beach in silent remorse.
I am sure with their presence and prayers Marty started his next journey without remiss.
To the family this writing is without malice please accept my condolences in this trying time.
God Bless.
