Last week after dropping off the out going mail at the Loon Lake Canada Post, I was parked on Main Street making several phone calls. Apparently I was there for quite some time with the key on which drained the battery of its life. When I attempted too leave all you heard was that familiar clicking sound of a lifeless battery. Having been in this predicament previously I popped the hood located the booster cables attached them on the battery then hung the other end over the fender, then started looking for someone to give me a boost. Luckily a gentleman on the other side of the street had seen my dilemma and reacted with true western spirit. He made a u turn pulled along side me and without any real exchange of words we boosted my truck, put away the cables, and then settled into introductions.
It turns out the gentleman was Mr. Arlett and he was no stranger to Ministikwan Lake. As a matter of fact 40 years ago he was part of the DNR crew who built the Ministikwan campground. He told me a few stories about how he and Ernie Gulkawhich surveyed the site using only a compass traipsing through the woods. He was proud of this fact and rightly so, as this was a feat that was tough to accomplish, no GPS back then. He told me about running back and forth to Peck Lake and I queried the state of the GOAT TRAIL back then: Mr Arlett’s most vivid memory of one of his drives from Ministikwan to Peck Lake was the day the battery flipped out of its holder leaving him stranded on the road (goat trail) and here I thought I was going to hear a resoundingly good report.
As we know the Minister of Highways Jim Reiter on April 20th in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix proclaimed “Saskatchewan roads would be the envy of the Nation” he failed to say in which century.
At any rate we know that if we come up with a percentage of the construction costs the reconstruction will start sooner than later, therefore a new and innovative fundraising campaign will be set in motion this summer with all profits going towards the reconstruction of the GOAT TRAIL.
I SURVIVED THE GOAT TRAIL tee shirts will be available for purchase this July and if anyone has a good slogan please let us know via the Lore and More web site.
