Winds of change keep blowing - May12

Last week as the wind was blowing all the changes in Canada and around the globe.
It was also blowing hard on Ministikwan Lake so hard in fact that the honeycombed ice quickly pushed up on the shores and started cracking into large ice islands floating back and forth in the bay.
Occasionally a massive island of ice would push up on the shore shredding its self while pushing the sand and rocks with it, similar to a scraper. Before long the bay was clear of ice allowing ice from the big portion of the lake to float in.
Normally the ice will go off the lake around the 10th of May give or take a few days but it has been as late as the Sunday of the May long weekend.
This year May 7th was the day in case anyone is keeping track. What you don’t really see with ice is the power and force a huge floating ice cube has. I recall years ago I built a nice long dock; we had gone out during the winter and pounded posts with a post pounder then built cribs to hold the dock on. Supposedly very strong.
Well the nails weren’t even cool when a large floating Ice mass blew in turning my hours of labour into kindling wood in a few short seconds. Disappointing to say the least.
Today it is again nice to see the ripples on the water as the lake is free from its winter blanket. The spring runoff this year has added much needed water increasing the vertical depth to it highest in the past 15 years. The water fowl too are back. Geese were first then the loons along with the ducks.
This year with the lingering cold weather one begins to wonder if winter is really over. Cold or not the lake season has started fishing season is open and camping will soon begin on Ministikwan Lake.
