Avoiding tragedy
Just when you thought all the bases were covered out of no where comes a curve ball and as we all discover it’s not the first time. It has happened in Calgary it has happened in Winnipeg and now in Big River Saskatchewan.
The very system which has been implemented nation wide, the very system we instruct our children to use in case of an emergency, has yet again failed us. Leaving behind a tragedy which may very well have been avoided had the proper 911 protocols and follow ups taken place? This information will come to us after what I am sure will be a lengthy inquiry.
A young teenager from Ministikwan Lake First Nation perished last week attempting to secure assistance for the party she was traveling with, the young lady walked 60 kilometres in her attempt to get help before succumbing to the elements. The party lost their way on the return trip to Ministikwan Lake from Big River Saskatchewan, it appears they missed a left turn which ultimately sent them to a dead end logging road where they became stuck in the water covered road.
Kerry Caneptatoe made her final walk into the creator’s arms on grid road 942 north of Big River Saskatchewan bravely fighting the elements of this very remote part of Saskatchewan in her fatal attempt to bring rescuers to the three stranded relatives she left behind.
Kerry was found last Monday April 12 / 2010, the subsequent RCMP investigation and identification took until Thursday April 15 / 2010 when all the pieces of the puzzle came together and after an all out search was launched the rescuers found the three stranded people still with the vehicle and alive. The 911 call was made April 8th / 2010 but no officers were dispatched.
Details are very vague but it is known the 911 call center received a call requesting a tow truck, from here all lips are tight, pending an independent inquiry. So what does that tell us “HUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM”. Set up damage control sequence another Robert Dziekanski is about to unfold.
Events like this seem to pull on the very fabric of our society, have we become complacent and accepting of events like this, are we allowing our piers to produce explanations without consequence?
Ministikwan Lake Chief is also looking for answers. As events of this tragedy unfolded involving his Band members RCMP failed to keep him informed.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time, May the Creator hold you close and give you strength.
