In 1994 as Donna Kay finished
producing and pressing her independent
CD “Out of the Blue,” marketing
and promotion became the focus.
Even from Ministikwan Lake everyone
pitched in looking for all possible avenues
to get the album into the public’s eye.
Donna’s father took it upon himself to
look up Pamela Wallin, a Saskatchewan
born broadcaster at the time (now a
Canadian Senator). Actually he telephoned
Pamela’s father in Watrous, SK
and started conversing as if they were
meeting for the first time at an auction
sale.
I think perhaps it’s a Saskatchewan
thing and Donna’s father may even have
perfected it. You pull up beside someone
and just start talking; the other person
is normally polite trying desperately to
play catch up and figure out what the
hell his new friend is talking about, once
past the awkward stage, the real conversation
begins. Only in Saskatchewan.
At any rate they talk, Donna’s father
sends a CD. Pamela’s father forwards
on the CD and explains the conversation;
subsequently out of the blue
Pamela Wallin calls Donna at home one
afternoon a short while after the fathers
had spoken.
Pamela and Donna both had a good
chuckle over the lengths each father had
gone in aid of their daughters.
Pamela was very gracious explaining
she was not in the music business and
didn’t know how she could be of any
help, but really enjoyed the music. Again
only in Saskatchewan where people are
real and they make a difference.
