Ministikwan Lake and
surrounding area will soon
be receiving radio waves
on the FM dial. It has taken
just over a year for the
CRTC to grant Island Lake
with a radio license. Now
with the license in hand,
the equipment is being
purchased and the station
room is being developed.
Before long local programming will be
hitting the air waves from the Island
Lake studio.
While in Maui we have come to
know the local non-profit radio station
“Manao” Radio KEAO-LP 91.5 on the
FM dial Maui Hawaii. The station
is operated on a volunteer basis by
primarily retired programmers who
now make Maui their home. As it
turns out a good number of these
programmers are also very accomplished
musicians in various
styles.
This we have come to know as
Donna has taken up jamming a
couple of nights a week with
a few of these folks, travelling
up country from the beach to
the Makawao area, where the
temperatures are a little lower
and substantially more rainfall.
Manao Radio does a fair bit of
local Island programs from the traditional
Island sounds and culture to
new local Hawaiian artists.
We are hoping to share back and
forth the cultural sounds of both
communities as we perhaps become
sister stations. The days ahead will
be interesting hopefully for both
audiences. Ministikwan Lake will
be blessed with the Hawaiian Aloha
Spirit as Maui will be blessed with the
Spirit of the Island Lake Cree.
