There are few treasures in this life and it may be odd that one in our family is the old Findlay Meteor wood cook stove, which became the heart of our the kitchen.
This stove arrived in our home some 30 years ago with a loving and fond memory attached to it.
When Donna was a young girl living at Ministikwan Lake, she occupied one of the cabins during the summer with her cat and dog on a lonely day she would occasionally visit the neighbours Walter & Mary.
Mary was like a second mother always welcoming Donna along with the animals, they would visit, perhaps catch an episode of The Edge of Night as Mary had an early version of the RCA TV and Donna just a radio. If a visit extended into the evening and darkness fell the road home was scary so Donna would spend the night. Upon awakening the sweet aroma of wood burning was in the air as Mary had just purchased a new cook stove a Findlay Meteor and was toasting bread over the coals. A memory imbedded with Donna.
With the passing of time Donna went of to work in Edmonton, Walter passed on Mary moved into Lloydminster to live with her daughter Linda the land was sold cook stove and all.
In 1979 we built a new home where Donna’s cabin had previously overlooked the lake, we opted to include a wood stove in the kitchen pushing the fridge to an unlikely location. The stove we found was quite large a “McClary” no where as nice as Mary’s.
As it turned out Ray Nelson had purchased the property next door and very graciously traded Donna straight across for Mary’s cook stove as the house had been abandoned, a happy day for Donna.
For 30 odd years now Mary’s cook stove not only has cooked and baked but provided a warm atmosphere in our kitchen along with many memories especially over the Christmas season. This year had a Ministikwan mystery.
