Election time at the lake - February 3

During the summer months at Island Lake First Nation (Ministikwan Lake) you may find that people are out on the ’Pow Wow Trail’.
During this time every two years you fi nd the folks out on the campaign trail vying for a seat at the Chief and Councils table.
The 2011 electoral campaign started last Saturday, Jan. 29 with 42 candidates being nominated for council and 5 candidates nominated for the chiefship.
Included in the nominations for chief is incumbent Leslie Crookedneck, a six-year veteran of the position and previous council member.
New to the scene is Darlene Paddy. Also new to the scene is Lillian Bear. Kevin Lewis, council member, has thrown his hat in the ring for both chief and for council.
Harvey Pahtaykan, a former chief, is also running.
All the candidates will be out trying their level best to gain the ear of the people for the next 45 days.
The final tally will be made on the eve of Monday, March 14, 2011.
We wish all the candidates the best of luck in their election bid.
It would be nice to see the Goat Trail as an election issue. Perhaps the First Nation can twist an arm or two in an endeavour to improve the drive up to Ministikwan Lake.
